Checklist for Accidents Involving a Company Owned Vehicle

Businesses are always on the move and as such you or your employees are going to end up behind the wheel as part of operating your business.   According to the United States Census Bureau, there are over 11 million traffic accidents in the U.S. each year.  Having your work vehicles covered with a commercial auto insurance policy is vital to protect your business and its assets.  You should take it one step further and make sure you train your employees on what they should and shouldn’t do in the event of an accident.

Commercial Vehicle Accident Guidelines

Do:

  • Stay Calm
  • Call an ambulance if anyone is injured
  • Assist those injured but do not administer first aid unless you are qualified
  • Obtain:
    • license number of other drivers
    • insurance company names & policy numbers of other vehicles
    • make, year, model of other vehicles
    • date & time of accident, overall road and weather conditions
    • photographs, if possible
  • Provide the other party(s) with your name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and insurance information
  • Immediately report the accident to your employer
  • Obtain a police report from the appropriate police agency

Do Not:

  • Accept any responsibility for the accident
  • Sign any statements
  • Argue with anyone
  • Discuss the accident with anyone at the scene except the police
  • Leave the scene until you are cleared to do so by police
  • Consume alcohol within 8 hours following an accident or until undergoing a post-accident alcohol test, whichever occurs first
